New Music: Black Holes by COSM

FFO: Slowdive, Airiel, Ride

Ahead of their performance at 2026’s edition of Boardmasters Festival, the first release of the year from psych-gazers COSM – Black Holes – oozes a cathartic shroud over the listener. The quartet are well versed in writing atmospheric masterpieces, as their self-titled debut EP can attest, and Black Holes is proof that their songwriting has only grown.

Channelling the power and relentlessness of grief into your work is no mean feat. Capturing the pain and confusion of losing someone in your art is a torturous exercise at the best of times, but doing it with maturity and composure is another altogether.

About the lyrical content and inspiration for Black Holes, lead vocalist/guitarist Tom Hunter shared, “I wrote this song after losing someone very close to me. I used to study astronomy, and the formation of black holes became an obsession of mine after their passing. I found black holes as a concept were a metaphor for me consuming myself entirely in grief.”
